Varuna is a keeper of the low in the world, or Rta, in Sanscrit. Originally Varuna was a sky god, who "placed the sun in the sky and Soma in the mountain". Soma is a juice of the sacred plant that make people and gods high and full of spiritual fire. He is also known as the master of oceans and rivers, who waters the soil, the earth and the sky. He is the one who helps to see "intelligence in hearts and fire in the waters". He is one of the most ancient Vedic gods. He supervised the Demons of the ocean and of darkness.

He is watching over deeds of man and punishes those who violate the low. Everyone know, when you commite a sin or evil action, it will come back to you and you'll be punished. The force that punishes is personified as Varuna. He gives no exuce even for sins that was commited unconsiosly, under the influence of alcohol or anger, or in sleep, since sleep is a state of your conciosness and you take responcibility of your actions at this state. They say, whatever is truly in your heart will manifest in your sleep. Even if you try to supress some evil actions in your couscios life, you still have to pay for them just for a fact they exist in you. Being completely pure is the goal of your development and a freedom from sufferings, brought as a punishment by Varuna, the Lord of rightiosness. Vedas tells us a story of how closest friend of Varuna, sage Vasistha, did something wrong in a dream and Varuna broke the friendship. Meanwhile, Vasistha wasn't even aware he did something wrong, but knew he commited some crime, because Varuna woudn't punish for nothing. So the sage is praying to Varuna to let him know what's wrong. So, people pray to Varuna to be free from sin, or at least know, where the evil hides in our mind, to find it and eliminate it. And people, since Vedic times pray:

"If we have commited an offence against one who has always been a comrade, or a brother, or a neighbour - one of our own or stranger- loosen that offence from us, Varuna. If we have cheated like gamblers in a game, whether we know it or really don't know it, or God, cast all theseoffences away."Rig Veda, 5.85.7

And since we, to all esoteric teachings, including Bible, have to pay for ill deeds of our ancestours, from three generations prior us, they say: "Free us from the harmful deeds of our fathers, and from those that we have commited with our body". Rig Veda 7.86.5 So, if you really care about your children, try not to commit to much of a bad actions, since they are who might pay for it too.

Because sin, or evil, is a cause of any possible disease, Varuna is a great healer, who help you to get rid of a very source of the disease. So, Varuna bouth sends the disease upon the person as a punishment, but also, by the grace of his nature, satisfies the thirst of man, who suffers from physical or spiritual fever. He is a god of waters, after all. Yama, the god of death, is his friend.

Varuna is also a giver of wealth, he "speeds the clever man to wealth", giving you, really, a wisdom and wit to be rich. He makes people thoughtful, making "generation wise" also in order to be free from sin, that comes from ignorance.

In various sculptures and paintings, he is represented with a water pot in his hand and is the deity of fluidity and movement. He destroys all evil sprits in the underwater world and rides a fish called Makarna. Pushpagiri is the underwater mountain where Varuna lives in his gem-encrusted palace. His chariot, created with white surf, is drawn by several horses made of powerful ocean waves.
